Are video & telephone (Telehealth) consultations with a GP covered by Medicare?

From 9 November 2020, there are changes to the Medicare rebates available for Telehealth appointments in metropolitan Melbourne. Not all Telehealth appointments are eligible for a Medicare rebate.

A video or phone Telehealth appointment with one of our GPs is only eligible for a Medicare rebate if the patient has had a GP appointment at The Neighbourhood Clinic in person in the previous 12 months, OR the patient is under the age of 12 months, OR the patient is experiencing homelessness. If you do not fit any of these criterion, you can still book an appointment with one of our GPs but there will be a private fee payable with no Medicare rebate.

All GP Telehealth appointments must be booked online HERE.

Are Telehealth/Video consults covered for Allied Health (Psychologists, Osteopaths, Exercise Physiologists, Dietetics, TCM) eligible for any 3rd party payers?

Check with your private health cover to see if you can claim your Telehealth Consultation with our practitioners. Medicare have approved Telehealth Chronic Disease Management (EPC/TCA) for all Allied Health.
Work Safe (Work Cover) and TAC has approved Telehealth Consultations for all Allied Health Services. Please contact the clinic to arrange an appointment.
You can also book a privately paid Telehealth Consultation with any of our practitioners.

How does a telehealth appointment for Doctors work?

For a Doctor GP appointment

  1. After you have made your booking online you will receive a text confirmation of your appointment
  2. Take some time to prepare by reading through our Telehealth Tips page: www.theneighbourhood.clinic/telehealth-tips
  3. Go to our website 5 minutes before your appointment and click onto the "Waiting Room Room" button at the top of our page and wait.
  4. You will see your practitioner on your page when they are ready for the consultation.
  5. Please ensure your practitioner has your mobile phone number to begin with should there be any video interruptions.

  2. Take some time to prepare by reading through our Telehealth Tips page: www.theneighbourhood.clinic/telehealth-tips
  3. Go to your confirmation email and find your video link 5 minutes before your appointment and click on it and wait for your practitioner to join.

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth involves the use of telecommunications and virtual technology to deliver health care outside of traditional health-care facilities.

Why would I use an online doctor or practitioner?

It may be the only way you can consult with your practitioner or it may be a more convenient and safer way to consult with your practitioner. It may also be a convenient way to get a second opinion on some health matters.

Will my health practitioner have access to my records on the Telehealth call?

If you are a current patient of The Neighbourhood Clinic our practitioners will have access to your medical records to reference throughout your consultation. If you have not been to the clinic you can request a medical record transfer from your current medical practice.

Do you accept new patients via Telehealth?

Yes, however, you will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate for your appointment.

Can I get prescriptions or referrals on a telehealth call?

Yes. If your doctor prescribes a medication they will arrange for that prescription to be sent to a pharmacy of your choice, or sent as an electronic prescription to your phone

What services can my doctor provide?

Medical Advice and Education, treatment of common infections, prescriptions, medical certificates, blood tests, referrals and many other services.

If I have a local GP or Practitioner can you send my results to them?

Yes we can send your consultation information and or results to your requested clinic if required

How secure is a telehealth call?

Cue tech jargon: We use a peer-to-peer software system video calls are encrypted end-to-end which makes it more secure than traditional systems of video calls. Encrypted data is only transmitted between the participants — not intercepted or stored on a server so data cannot be recorded and controlled by a non-Australian entity. Our software's high level of security is compliant to the Australian Privacy Policy and legal requirements about handling medical data

Is my video recorded anywhere. Will my telehealth call remain confidential?

Once a session is started, information (video or files) is shared only between the call participants. All data is encrypted and no information is retained by the system.

How much will a telehealth call cost?

For more information about our fees, see: https://www.theneighbourhood.clinic/prices

Should I use this if I think I have COVID19?

If you suspect you have been exposed to, or are exhibiting mild symptoms of, COVID19 you can use our telehealth service. But please also be aware that there is a free hotline that you can call 1800 020 080 Also, if you are experiencing signs of respiratory distress the government has set up screening clinics at these hospitals: Austin Hospital, Box Hill Hospital, The Alfred Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Monash Clayton, Sunshine Hospital, and Northern Hospital. The closest to us in Fitzroy North is the Royal Melbourne Hospital. For more information on COVID19 please check out our rolling updates page https://www.theneighbourhood.clinic/coronavirus-updates

What if my Telehealth Video Call does not work?

Telehealth is new. There will be glitches with the system. We, and the developers have done our best to test the system but it relies on certain things out of our control like: the quality of internet or the quality of the device you are using. If there are some issues the consultation will continue over the phone.
